Alllora
Pack a picnic basket and drive to Allora for the day.  Allora is a friendly little town 25 kilometres north of Warwick.  The Sunflower Route will take you past paddocks that are green with springtime lucern, golden with summer sunflowers or rusty red with autumn sorghum.  The town has grassy parks, a supermarket, cafes and hotels which are open on weekends.

The museum is open by appointment (ring 07 4666 3474), so too is the nearby toy gallery where you can be entertained with a puppet show which depicts the history of the area. Allora’s delightful main street offers genuine hospitality with sidewalk cafes and shops displaying crafts, toys, quilting and collectables.  Visitor Information Packs are available from one historic building to the next.

Street banners reflect the theme and a series of murals at the gates of the showground depict local milestones.  The town was the childhood home of P.L.Travers who wrote the Mary Poppins stories.  The railway station has been restored and a replica rail motor awaits the reopening of the branch line to Hendon.  The fallen soldier’s memorial is one of only two Boer War memorials in Queensland.  St David’s Church, built in 1887, is a fine wooden country church which features beautiful stainded glass windows.

There is a nine-hole golf course with a very challenging first hole!  Midway between Allora and Warwick, on the New England Highway, the 1867 Glengallan Homestead and Heritage Centre offers a rare experience of colonial life in the unusual setting of a two-story sandstone mansion.  An innovative restoration reflects the rise and fall of Darling Downs squattocracy.  Also of interest are Goomburra State Forest with rainforest, waterfalls and camping.
